“How to install a Minecraft Mod without a Mod installer”
This also works for any version of minecraft!
In this guide I will walk you step by step on how to install a Minecraft mod without a Mod installer. This guide is full of pictures to help make installing minecraft mods a breeze… I’ve also included a video personally made by me.
However if you’re using forge check out my youtube video on how to install a minecraft modd using forge for 1.6.4!
Installing a minecraft mod the old way without forge or modloader
1. Okay the first thing we need to do is head over to Minecraft forum and find us a mod.
This is where you’ll find all the mods for minecraft. Players upload their mods in this forum so everyone can see / download. There’s a lot of nice mods on the forum, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one to download.
( I chose to download OptiFine in this tutorial)
2. Placing the Minecraft Mod somewhere that we can easily copy it.
After you’ve downloaded the Minecraft mod of your choice let’s begin installing the minecraft mod. The next thing we need to do is navigate to our download folder and move our mod to our desktop so we can easily access it later.
If you’re on Windows 7 or Vista click on the start menu and type “Downloads” it should be the first choice.
XP: Search for DownloadsOnce you’ve found your download folder copy the mod to your desktop and move on to step 3.
3. One you downloaded the mod, we’ll need a program to open minecrafts .jar file.
I use WinWar in the tutorial, but it isn’t free. There’s a program called 7ZIP that is free. You’ll have to google it though. Either is fine to use.

4. Enable HiddenFolders on PC
Note: In order to find our Minfract folder we will need to enable Hidden Folders. The reason we need to do this is because by default your appdata folder is hidden.
in Windows 7, Windows 8 and vista: Type “Folder options” in your search bar
5. Now that we can see hidden folder options let’s find our minecraft folder
- Click on your user profile (click the start button then on your name) and look for a folder called “AppData”
If you’re having trouble finding this try going to the start menu and typing in %appdata%
- Click “Roaming”
- Find “.Mincraft”
6. Open Minecraft.jar
Inside the Minecraft Bin folder look for “Minecraft.jar”
Open it using 7ZIP or WINWAR if you have it.
Step 7. Now open the Mod folder that we placed on the desktop and copy the Files over to your Minecraft Bin Folder.
Simply select all files and drag them in
Step 8. Delete the META_INF folder inside Minecraft bin and close everything then run Minecraft and enjoy your game!
*NOTE* If you get a black screen and already deleted META_INF folder inside of minecrafts bin then chances are the mod you’re using isn’t compatible with the version of Minecraft you’re using.
